david stellmach - bio

It is our pleasure to introduce David Stellmach, pianist and composer. His debut CD PIANO SOLOS is being compared to the music of George Winston, but with its own unique sound. "When I first heard it, I thought it was a new George Winston album", is a common remark of first-time listeners unfamiliar with Stellmach's music. Piano solos is receving praise from the general public, healthcare professionals, and educators for its captivating sound and relaxing effect.

David Stellmach was born June 2, 1967 to a musical family in which he grew up listening to his grandfather perform polkas on the accordian. David's father, a jazz fan, introduced him to the music of Dave Brubeck and brought him to his first concert, at age 8, to hear the Dave Brubeck Quartet at McCarter Theatre in Princeton, New Jersey. David also recalls listening to his mother sing at church, encouraging him to sing also. In addition to jazz, classical and pop, Genesis, Yes, Emerson-Lake-and-Palmer and other '70's progressive groups influenced his early musical direction and appreciation for great keyboardists. The solo piano works of Keith Jarrett, and most especially George Winston, have helped shape his current style of composition and performance.

David recalls, "I met George Winston one night back in 1990 after his show at Lincoln Center, NYC. I even got to play the piano with him for a few minutes." David continued attending concerts and even managed to give Winston a tape of his own music. David wrote George inquiring about music production, etc. for the making his own album. "I'm sure I was bothering him, but he always took the time to respond to my letters," he says. "Then I was fortunate enough to meet him again at his NJPAC concert, where I gave him a copy of my new CD and a letter thanking him for his advice and recommendations over the years. He really is one of the most down-to-earth and multi-talented performers today, and has been a great inspiration to me as a musician and a person."

David recorded PIANO SOLOS on a digital Yamaha Clavinova CVP-87A, which he uses for performances in addition to acoustic pianos when available. His photography is featured on the CD cover and inserts. David Stellmach earned a Bachelor's degree in Journalism from Rutgers University, and a Master's degree in Occupational Therapy from New York University.
